The funding programme, administered by the Government’s appointed National Lottery organisation, was created in 1998 and awards grants to education, health and environment projects throughout the country. Many of the grant programmes focus particularly on those in society who are most disadvantaged. By working in partnership with other organisations the aim is to support sustainable projects that will: improve the quality of life of people throughout the country; address the needs of those who are most disadvantaged in society; encourage community participation; and complement relevant local and national strategies.
Country-wide New Opportunities funded projects include ‘Neighbourhood Nurseries’ and ‘Five-a-Day’ community healthy eating initiatives. The Neighbourhood Nurseries awards will enable the creation of nursery places for parents eager to access high quality childcare provision. The five-a-day healthy eating initiatives are aimed at preventing heart disease, cancer and strokes. The five-a-day community initiatives will offer a range of activities from cookery classes in community centres and mobile delivery services, to grow your own fruit and vegetable schemes and the development of farmers markets and food co-operatives.
In Rotherham, funding was granted to Age Concern Rotherham to provide ICT training and learning experiences for older people. Using ICT is one way in which local residents can contribute to the regeneration of community life and recreating sustainable and vibrant communities.
