The funding programme, administered by Sport England, supports sports organisations and sporting activities in England. In addition to the joint distributor Awards for All programme, there are two main funding programmes:

  • Community Projects Capital Fund
For building or equipment projects costing over £5,000. Priority projects include those that aim to encourage more young people, women, people on low incomes, people from ethnic communities and people with disabilities to take part in sport. To be supported, organisations applying for the funding must be properly constituted and will be expected to raise additional funding from other sources to contribute to the costs.

  • Active Communities Development Fund
For helping people from low-income groups, people with disabilities, women and girls, and people from ethnic minority communities to get on the road to an active lifestyle. Funding will be given for projects requiring anything between £5,000 and £30,000 a year for up to five years. To be supported, individuals/organisations applying for the funding must have some money of their own or be able to demonstrate that they have tried to get help from other people.

Manchester Commonwealth Games facilities benefited from £112 million investment from the Sport England Lottery Fund. Significant economic and social benefits were generated during the construction phase, the Games themselves and afterwards. A total of £36.7 million of private sector investment was generated and many jobs created.

In Rotherham a National Lottery application is currently in the course of development for major refurbishment work at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre and Playing Fields. If successful, this will extend facilities to include a 33 metre swimming pool, an indoor bowling centre and expanded fitness suite.
